Since the “Shoes for the Sole” initiative kicked off last January, leaders in the Butte school district have raised about $8,700 to provide shoes for students in need of new soles. At last count, leader Melissa Johnson, dean at the Butte High Career Center, and her students, have collected 105 pairs of new shoes. Johnson and her students – required to apply for the position in a real-world work situation – deliver the shoes regularly and confidentially to students with the teachers’ help. The goal is to reach $10,000 by Jan. 27, 2016 – a year to the day physical education teacher Cindy McCarthy started the program after noting several students in need in her classes. The project also gives Butte High Career Center students the opportunity to learn business communication skills, work strategies and problem-solving skills. Regular donors and one-time donors have stepped up over the last year to make Shoes for the Sole a rousing success.

To donate, contact Melissa Johnson at Butte High Career Center, 1050 S. Montana St., 406-533-2974 or Mary Kaye Ericson, Butte school district administration building, 111 N. Montana, 406-533-2527.
